The online reviews are huge. Now you know. How many times have you used Amazon reviews to decide whether or not to buy a product? Secretly shopping around at Best Buy or Target to see what reviewers are saying? Do you use Yelp reviews to decide whether to go to a new restaurant for lunch? If so, then you know how powerful reviews can be, and what is called social proof.
We use social proof to determine the right actions to take, assuming that other people in the same situation know more than we do. When it comes to online reviews, we assume that other people who have bought and tried a product or service will provide honest feedback on how it worked for them, and then we tend to follow suit, buy or not buy. According to a study carried out by Vendasta, online reviews are increasingly important in purchasing decisions:
